South Piedmont AHEC Health Careers Impact

The South Piedmont AHEC Difference

Where are They Now?

As part of our mission to improve the geographic distribution, retention, and quality of health care providers throughout the state, South Piedmont AHEC develops initiatives that introduce pre-college youth and more recently college students to the vast array of health care professions. We have been actively engaged in this work since 1996 and would like to share a few updates on the students that have matriculated through our program.

Feature Stories

Kennedy Scott
Position:
Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse
College:
Stevenson University
Stevenson, MD

Impact: AHEC helped me find the profession of nursing and introduced me to all of its versatility. There are so many opportunities for career growth.

Adriene Mitchell
Position:
Internal Medicine Preliminary residency
College:
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro, NC
ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, NC

Impact: Through the many opportunities I received in high school from HEROES, it directly led me to being Dr. Mitchell.

I learned about pipeline programs from college to medical school, received clinical volunteer opportunities at an early age, and received my CNA certification at 16 years old. Being able to learn from doctors who look like me allowed me to have visions of myself becoming who I am today. It was also a great social avenue to meet like-minded kids who I still know to this day, who are my lifelong friends.

Kayla Christian
Position:
Registered Behavior Technician
College:
University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Charlotte, NC
Capella University, Minneapolis, MN (postbaccalaureate)

Impact: AHEC provided me with knowledge about the barriers that impact an individual from receiving healthcare.

For examples, insurance and ACEs, the trauma a person experiences plays a huge role in getting the care they need. When working with children with autism and their families, we consider all the environmental factors such as trauma and how it impacts the home life of the child and how it later plays a part in their child's health. AHEC provided me with a different view point as a rising healthcare professional and now I practice trauma assumed/informed care with my teammates and clients.
